The Elegance of the Ermine

Midnight, and a messenger comes from a prayer niche,

someone as quiet as moonlight,
yet with a torch that burns our sleeping.

A king knocks on the doorkeeper's door
and laughing, leads everyone out to a table.

Our lips tremble at the cup, with the same trembling
as a drop of mercury.

The gentleness of the host is the same
as that that made the elegance of the ermine.

The dry and wet of a love affair,
those tears are identical to the taking in
and giving away of a waterwheel's turning.

The keys that open all gates
are strapped to love's chest.

When a bird is completely broken and still,
it gets removed from the snare.

This list of rude likenesses
does not come near saying
what happens in our lives.

Today is the big day! I'm in the LAX lounge right now (I flew here from Denver) and I will let the pictures below do some of the talking! I am going to board my flight for Melbourne, Australia soon (where I will apparently be served yet another dinner - a SEVEN course Japanese dinner - pictures to come tomorrow, probably!).

Being here right now and on this trip feels surreal and I'm excited beyond words. I am sorry that I am not being more eloquent about it. I need to stay up until at least 1am Denver time to get as used to the time difference as I can, so I will try to get a mocha (chocolate + coffee = mmmmm) in the lounge here and watch movies and do crossword puzzles to keep me awake on the flight.

Here are some pictures thus far:

Three types of cheese at the Denver United Lounge - I didn't get any because I didn't have my Lactaid with me and they also looked kind of old! I did get a cup of (unpictured) decaf green tea with honey, lemon, and ginger slices! I ended up chewing on the ginger slices (which help a lot with nausea/ digestion - I know it sounds weird, but it works and I'm definitely the person who asks for extra ginger with my sushi at Japanese restaurants!).

Salad and soup (chicken noodle and roasted red pepper) bar. The only thing I tried a bit of was the 3 bean salad... it was meh - I think it needed more vinegar to give it a more sour zing. And more salt, too.

Fruit, chocolate chip cookies, trail mix, and (unpictured) chocolate chip brownie bites. The brownies were awesome, but I wish that I could have heated them for the chips to melt a little bit. I was going to get a cookie, too, but they were not chewy, the way I like them!

My flight here from Denver was over an hour delayed and we sat in the plane the entire time while it was getting de-iced, so I worked on newspaper puzzles.... I also talked to my "neighbor" who was really into planes and told me all about the Dreamliner plane (787) that I will be flying to Melbourne and it was actually a really interesting discussion...

Piping hot salted cashews and almonds! Cashews are naturally "softer" and "creamier" but warming up the almonds made them take on a similar texture, reminiscent of crunchy almond butter. They were delicious and warming!

I am normally a vegan, but when I travel there are no rules in terms of food and I aspire to eat as the "Romans" (i.e. insert location here) do. Still, I passed on the beef, and noshed on the spinach salad with olive oil and balsamic roasted red peppers, yellow squash, zucchini, and mushrooms and honey dijon dressing. I also ate the roasted potatoes and root vegetables with the au jus sauce. Unfortunately, rather than being buttery soft, as I had hoped, they were rather hard and undercooked. I also passed on the chocolate chip cookie even though it did smell good... I am anticipating a large dessert on this next flight!

I also watched "The Nice Guys" on the plane and it was quite entertaining! I know that I mentioned writing more movie, etc reviews on here when I get back from my trip and I intend to do just that...

I have to get going soon, but I will keep updating this blog as often and as thoroughly as I can!
