Affirmation: “Being positive does not mean ignoring the negative.  Being positive means overcoming the negative.  There is a big difference between the two.”

The Mill

The heart is a wheatgrain. We are the mill
where this body is a millstone
and thought, the moving river.
The body asks the river why it runs on so.
The river says, Ask the miller who made
the millrace that directs my falling
that turns your stone.
The miller says, You that love bread,
if this turning were not happening,
what would you dip in your broth?
So a lot of questioning goes on
around the milling of wheat,
but what really is this breadmaking work?

Now let silence ask
about wheat and the river,
about the miller and the stone
and the taste of bread dipped in soup,
and this listening we do at the mill.

Today was an Australian gastronomic adventure, but I'll get to that in a second! I woke up at 5 am because I had to switch several buses and then walk to get to my 4.5 hour (18 km) bike tour of Sydney. It was an AMAZING experience and I learned and saw SO much. Every neighborhood and sight was wonderful.

During the tour, we also stopped at Sydney's oldest pub for lunch. I got to try lemon bitters (made with lemonade, lime cordial, and Angostra bitters - so fresh, crisp, and refreshing!) as well as a traditional Australian beef pie, mushy peas, potato mash, and gravy.

After the tour, I met up with my second cousin. We talked and walked around the pier and then met up with her husband and got Royal Copenhagen ice cream (boysenberry as well as the brand's signature honeycomb butterscotch caramel). We then went to their place in Balmain (a total "coffee shop" neighborhood that I loved) and hung out until about 7, when we went to her older sister's house in Ryde. We took pictures there with family and then had a late dinner that literally lasted over 3 hours.

But it was wonderful. And I ate and ate and ate to my heart's (actually more like my tongue's) delight. We went to an Australian place called Outback Jack's, where I got to try kangaroo (!) and crocodile (!!) skewers with sweet chili compote! I also tried ginger beer and bites of buttered garlic bread, cheesy garlic bread, bruschetta, pesto pasta, and nachos. My favorite was the grilled barramundi. It was buttery and flaky and really good. The kangaroo honestly just tasted like dry, gristly red meat and the crocodile was chewy, rubbery, and pretty unappetizing. I had to douse both of them in ample sauce to get them down.

Afterwards, we went to another Australian chain called Oliver Brown where I had more dessert than even dinner! I had a huge bowl of vanilla ice cream with chocolate ganache and these amazing waffles with Oreo's folded right into the batter and topped with melted Nutella. I also had a hazelnut brownie, which was rich, creamy, chewy and just melted in my mouth. I didn't get to bed until past 1am, but it was a really fun day and good to spend time with family.
