Learning From The Past
From a young age, we are taught to learn from our mistakes and this practice is emphasized to some extent throughout our adult lives, both in formal education as well as in terms of being a societal norm.
But when can past digging become pathologic?
When does navel gazing keep us ruminating and regretful?
When does our constant quest for self-improvement actually prevent us from being our best selves?
I believe that we are often at greater risk of trying to learn too much from the past. Constantly going over it and reviewing what
was keeps us from experiencing and living in the what
is.
The reality is that the past is an illusion. It is no longer a reality. The past is called the past because it has passed.
Circumstances are not what they used to be.
People and places have changed.
You are not the person you were.
Your energies are best spent on the
present and treating it like the
gift that it is.
