A Poem in a Letter
Before death takes away
what you are given,
give away what is there to give.
No dead person grieves for his death. He mourns only what he didn't do. Why did I wait? Why did I not ... ? Why did I neglect to ...?
I cannot think of better advice to send. I hope you like it. May you stay in your infinity.
Peace.

Stalking Pain
I had spent
Sixteen years
Stalking my pain
Like a tiger
In the forest
A snake
Slithering through the dessert
A bird
Circling its prey
In search for food
For sustenance
For safety
For Relief
I made sure to
Never get to close
To camouflage
In the shadows
Lie in wait
In the darkness
Close
But
Always just out of reach
I have been a hunter
Tracking the trail
Of blood
For years
Using my breath
As a compass
In the wasteland
I came upon a clearing
Where the snow was so white
It blinded me
It dazzled so
I stood in awe
In disbelief
In fear
My pain was limping
Exhausted
Accepting
No longer wanting
To fight for its life
The way
I have fought
For my life
I went to it softly
As it slowly sank to the ground
And I placed my hands
And my heart
On its body
My body
My heart
Tears
Of neither happiness nor sorrow
Tears of living
And of continuing to live
Of being neither here
Nor there
Of knowing
And not knowing
Washed us
Their salt
Stinging our wounds
Their water
Cleansing the debris
We had collected
Over time
We sat together
No longer
Following or
Running from
One another
In our quiet
And respectful
Peace
I had spent
Sixteen years
Stalking my pain

The poem about stalking pain was so raw and visceral. I think the relationship with pain tends to be more one of avoidance and maybe the pain stalks us looking for that one chink where the light can come in and we can stop suffering.
ReplyDeleteThat is a very interesting way to look at it and poetry (both reading and writing it) connects me to a place even deeper than words.
