I will start by giving you the lowdown on today's meditation before delving in to the idea of internal distraction/ restlessness/ exhaustion/ confusion/ conflicted-ness/ indecisiveness/ etc.:

Day 3 - Begin With Emotional Balance

(Chopra Center 21-Day Shedding the Weight Meditation)

Centering Thought: As my emotions flow freely, my life is lightened.

Quote: "Happiness is not a matter of intensity but of balance, order, rhythm, and harmony."  —  Thomas Merton

Mantra: Om Shanti Om (I radiate peace.)

Yesterday I talked about the external distraction that took me out of my meditation "space" but I think that the larger challenge in meditation for me is internal distraction. My mind feels like is goes a million miles a minute and one of my initial aversions to writing - and even typing my thoughts - was the fact that my fingers could never remotely do justice to the speed of the thoughts in my head. It is like a TV screen that is incessantly changing channels and breakneck speed.

Meditation helps with this, but I am trying to be more mindful of not going into a resting pose unless I need it because that often turns into dozing off rather than actually training my mind to let go of those thoughts at hand and discipline it into focus and groundedness. Visualization also helps with focus and I am working on that skill because my memory is scarily less vivid that those of people around me. I remember facts and figures and data and events, but details and emotions are difficult for me. It seems that since about the age of 11 and other issues that were going in in my life then, my body has suppressed memories and sensations for protection. Sometimes smells still send me back places, however.

In any case, I know that I said that I would write more about life paths and career choices as a millennial. I am going into medicine but it is interesting that since 8th or 9th grade everyone who meets me - without exception that I can remember - had told me that I ought to go into law. There have been literally 100s of people. In terms of medicine, I am somewhat undecided and want to stay open to experience. In my shadowing experiences, I think that I enjoyed Emergency Medicine the most (out of that and OB/GYN and Orthopedic Surgery). The culture in EM seemed like the perfect fit for me but more than that, the job variety appealed to me a lot. I have always wanted to be the best at something, having a thing that I could call my own - including being the expert specialist doctor in a given field. But I have realized that my personality is more conducive to being a jack of all trades... and a master of my own life in that way. My interests are so diverse and far reaching and I am insatiably curious. I love networking, connecting, learning, and listening to others.

I am sure that I will readdress the topic of career many more times in this blog. For tomorrow, I want to explore the topic of relationships, although I am not sure whether I am ready to in such a public setting. Vulnerability is as scary as it is important to me.

I might start a quote(s) of the day feature along with my daily article round up and pictures/ holidays. Here are today's:

“Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy—the experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.”

- Brene Brown

“Don't try to win over the haters; you are not a jackass whisperer.”
- Brene Brown

“Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity and change.”
- Brene Brown

“I define connection as the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give and receive without judgment; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship.”
- Brene Brown

“We cannot selectively numb emotions, when we numb the painful emotions, we also numb the positive emotions.”
- Brene Brown

“Courage starts with showing up and letting ourselves be seen.”
- Brene Brown

“Because true belonging only happens when we present our authentic, imperfect selves to the world, our sense of belonging can never be greater than our level of self-acceptance.”
- Brene Brown

“Vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage. Truth and courage aren't always comfortable, but they're never weakness.”
- Brene Brown
